Giving Our Kids a 'Fighting Chance'
Did you know that a recent article in Time magazine1 suggested that for the first time in the last 100 years, our children may have a lower life expectancy than we do? Something is certainly wrong with our state of health today. It’s never made more sense to become committed to wellness.
It seems almost impossible to supply our children with their daily nutritional needs. Do your children enjoy eating their broccoli, brussel sprouts and turnips? Or would they rather prefer sandwiches washed down with a glass of red dye #5 cordial (fruit punch).
Studies have shown that 50% of western children receive only one serving of fruits or vegetables per day and 38% only receive two. At best, only 12% receive more than two servings each day.
When things go wrong, modern medicine is wonderful but certainly not the total answer. Taking the US as an example, three billion prescriptions will be given out in a year, yet the incidence of diseases and infections is not decreasing. The best approach is to judiciously use our modern medicine when appropriate but to also appreciate the body's incredible ability to repair, regenerate, regulate and protect itself when given the necessary raw materials and support it is already pre-programmed to need.
Another frightening factor in protecting our children's health is the ever increasing toxic load on their little bodies. There is no doubt they are subjected to indiscriminate vaccination and prescription drugs. Studies are emerging almost daily to show that children are now found laden with certain toxins while in utero, some have degenerative cardiac disease like adults decades older and their endocrine systems are severely challenged. This is an urgent problem which needs immediate action.
What is Malnourishment?
It's easy to picture the thin, emaciated bodies of children in Africa when you first think of malnutrition in children. However, did you know… that the NY Times has recently published an article titled 'Hidden Hunger' – this is about children in developed countries, the westernised world who are suffering as well. There is an 80% increase in potential for obesity if a child (or adult) is malnourished… typically what is the cause of this is our western diets which are high in calories but severely depleted in the life-giving micronutrients from healthy foods.
Food Inc, a recent documentary on western diets, goes on to explain that a LOT of the food we eat today isn't food at all, but 'edible, food-like substances'. Yikes! The bottom line: we're 'starving at the cell level' – and it's looking like chubby and obese children & adults.
Healthy Kids Is Mission Possible!
Raising Healthy Kids may be a challenge but it Is possible… requiring an educated pro-active approach. Our kids need fully informed parents who research, ask questions and find modern practitioners who work in partnership with their 'wellness' clients.
A modern approach includes multiple factors, much like the wellness choices of adults.
They need:
- healthy foods (keeping sugar and other processed foods to a 'treat' category),
- food-based supplements which ensure minimum cellular requirements are met,
- activity with family and peers,
- healthy social and emotional modelling and
- support to know and build their spiritual connection.
