What is Wellness?
Such a good question and a point to ponder… and possibly one you might not have even thought about unless you've lost it!
Unfortunate but true. Typically, the average person has been taught to look at their health/wellness like this… keep going, eat a good diet (what's that?), go to the doctor when something goes wrong, and prepare yourself for the aches, pains and decline into the unavoidable diseases of aging! True?? Yuck!
When you think about it, the 'average' person is educated about wellness from their parents, extended family, medical doctor, schools and TV… Even thinking about that list is scary! However well meaning, they will be getting outdated and conflicting information at best. Even the medical doctors – unless you go to a specifically wellness trained MD, your doctor will most likely be offering you advice from their training, also outdated and possibly biased. With the plethora of science and studies emerging today, the modern MD has their toughest job in keeping up with literature relevant to their specific specialty, not to mention emerging areas of science & wellness.
Another point to consider when sitting in the doctors office… has your doctor had the training in his/her education to say "I don't know" or "I haven't heard of this, let's take a look at this together'. Again you'd have to say for the most part the answer would be no.
“If the doctors of today do not become the nutritionists of tomorrow,
then the nutritionists of today will become the doctors of tomorrow.”
~ Rockefeller Institute of Medicine research
Wellness Is
This is what the dictionary says: Wellness: Fullest realization of physical & mental potential; attitude, fitness, diet, avoidance of unhealthy practices. (It is not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.) ~ Stedman’s Medical Dictionary, 27th Edition
We like this expanded version (adapted) by Don Aredell, PhD:
"Wellness is first and foremost a choice to assume responsibility for the quality of your life. It begins with a conscious decision to shape a healthy lifestyle. Wellness is a mindset, a predisposition to adopt a series of key principles in varied life areas that lead to high levels of well-being and life satisfaction.
A consequence of this focus is that a wellness mindset will protect you against temptations to blame someone else, make excuses, shirk accountability, or collapse in the face of adversity.
Wellness is an alternative to dependency on doctors and drugs, to complacency, to mediocrity and to self-pity, boredom and slothfulness.Welness is a philosophy that embraces many principles for good health. The areas most closely affected by your wellness commitments include self-responsibility, exercise and fitness, nutrition, stress management, critical thinking, meaning and purpose or spirituality, emotional intelligence, humor and play and effective relationships.
Wellness entails a conscious commitment to positive initiatives and principles for optimal functioning in all these areas."
